MAGISTRATE’S COMMENT (P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 16. “He does not appear to have realised the seriousness of the offence,” said counsel for Ernest Victor Eckman, aged 31, a boilermaker, when Eckman pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to stealing tools and steel, valued at £45, from his employer. Winstone, Ltd. “He even said to me ‘everybody’s doing it\” The Magistrate (Mr J. H. Luxford): “That is the trouble these days. Everybody does seem to be doing it. These thefts from employers are becoming of such a form that others say ‘We will do it too.’ ” The police said Eckman was a foreman, receiving slightly more than £lO a week in wages. The Magistrate said he should send him to prison for six months, but in view of the circumstances, and with great hesitation, he would admit hinx.to probation for two years. He ordered restitution of £45 to be made to the firm.
