INCIDENT AT AUCKLAND
“ REGARDED AS LOCK-OUT BY UNION” (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 16. “The New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union still regards what happened in Auckland yesterday as a lock-out, and it will be asking for a proper inquiry into this latest piece of official ineptitude,” said Mr H. Barnes, president of the union, and Mr T. Hill, the secretary, in a joint statement. The statement contested the explanation of the Minister of Labour (Mr A. McLagan) why normal work did not resume on the Auckland waterfront yesterday afternoon. FORDSDALE DIVERTED TO WELLINGTON (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 16. The Shaw Savill steamer Fordsdale, bound to New Zealand with general cargo from London, has been diverted from Auckland to Wellington, where she is expected on Monday. In a statement the company said the vessel’s diversion was due to congestion in Auckland, where the Fordsdale would have waited for 14 days in the stream before a berth would have been available. The Fordsdale would discharge at Wellington and Auckland, in that order.
