NEW AWARD FOR ELECTRICIANS

WAGE INCREASE OF ONE PENNY AN HOUR A minimum rate of 3s 8d an hour, representing an increase of Id an hour, for journeymen registered under the Electrical Wiremen’s Registration Act, is provided in a new award for the electrical workers in Canterbury, which has been issued by the Court of Arbitration. Other journeymen will be paid a minimum rate of 3s 7d. All will receive an overall and tool allowance of Id an hour. Overtime will be paid at the rate of time and a half for the first three hours and double time thereafter. Where conditions are unhealthy or more injurious to clothing than ordinary workshop conditions, dirt money at the rate of 3d an hour, with a minimum of 2s a day, is to be paid. Workers employed on ships’ masts 20 feet above the deck, festoonings on the exteriors of buildings more than 20 feet above the ground, or inside buildings 20 feet above the floor, will receive an extra 2s a day. Travelling expenses are to be paid, and for workers using bicycles on the employers’ business an allowance of 2s 6d a week will be paid.

Electrical supply authorities are exempt from the award.
