TEACHERS HONOURED
MISS M. SAUNDERS AND MR G. MITCHELL “As I travelled in different parts of New Zealand during the two years I was president of the New Zealand Educational Institute, I was greatly impressed by the conscientious service given by members of the teaching profession to the community—sometimes under difficult conditions,” said Mr George Mitchell (headmaster of the Lyttelton West School), when speaking at a social gathering held at the Teachers’ Training College. The party was arranged by the North Canterbury branch of tne New Zealand Educational Institute to honour two of its members—Miss Marion Saunders and Mr Mitchell. Miss Spunders will leave soon for Northern Scotland to take up a post as director of speech therapy and Mr Mitchell recently relinquished the post of president of the New Zealand Educational Institute which he had held during 1946 and 1947. • Mr W. H. Cartwright (Leeston), who is president of the North Canterbury branch of the institute, said that Miss Saunders had done valuable work in establishing in Christchurch a training centre for specialists in speech therapy. Many children throughout New Zealand, he said, owed improvement in speech directly to Miss Saunders. To Mr Mitchell, Mr Cartwright presented a small gift from members of the branch in acknowledgement of the splendid, tireless service he had given in the interests of teachers, especially during the years he was Dominion president of the institute.
-Sprays of flowers were presented to Miss Saunders,. Mrs Mitchell, and Mrs W. J. Cartwright, whose husband was a former Dominion president of the institute.
A Dickens sketch, arranged by Miss L. Dearsley, humorous items given by Mr H, Beaumont, and games and competitions comprised the programme for the evening.
