PLANTATION FIRE
BUSHMEN’S ACTION CRITICISED Criticism of the action of bushmen at a fire which broke out in the Selwyn Plantation Board’s plantation in Steele’s road on July 2 was expressed at the monthly meeting of the Selwyn County Council.
The fire broke out about 3.30 p.m. and some of the bushmen had attempted to fight it, it was stated. They had not realised, however, that the fire was in a dangerous condition and had left at 4.30 o’clock while the fire was still potentially dangerous. The bushmen’s action was considered by members to be a serious set-back to the operation of the voluntary firefighting organisation. It had not encouraged the volunteers who had turned out to fight the fire. The council authorised the signing and sealing of the agreement between five counties, constituting the Group Rural Fire Authority.
A general rate of 7-8 d in the £ and a hospital rate of |d in the £, as well as rates levied on behalf of other local bodies, was struck for the year. his , re P° r t the engineer said that 2750 cubic yards of gravel had been spread on roads in the county during the month.
