RANFURLY SHIELD
Sir, —I feel that the remarks of your sports writer “Miles’’ about the Ranfurly Shield should not be allowed to pass unchallenged. In the first place, it has never been the policy of the Otago Union to play club games on the same date as a representative match, whether for the shield or not. If Otago is “cashing in” on these matches, it is merely following the example of other previous shield holders, Canterbury included. “Miles” is apparently greatly discomfited at the thought of the Otago Union’s sound financial position. New grandstands are a definite asset to former players and al] other Rugby enthusiasts. Your writer’s parting shot at the Otago Union is surely wide of the mark. The uplift given to the game in general by the presence of the shield is enormous. Was Rugby in Canterbury stronger than in the early 1930’s?—Yours, etc ; , BLUE AND GOLD. July 13, 1948.
