IMPORTS OF TRACTORS

NEED FOR CRAWLER TYPE

MR NASH REPLIES TO QUESTION

(From Oiy Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, July 14. The need for agricultural tractors of the crawler type for wheat production in New Zealand w’as fully realised, said the Minister of Finance (Mr W. Nash) in the House of Representatives to-day in reply to a question from Mr D, C. Kidd (Opposition, Waitaki). Licences had been issued to cover all tractors of this type available from the United Kingdom. Dealing with possible imports from the UniJed States, Mr Nash said that the Government had had to bear in mind the special difficulties arising from the present dollar situation but, in allocating the additional sum recently provided to cover further American tractor imports, particular emphasis was placed on crawler types and the bulk of the special licences were being issued in respect of them. “It is proposed to consider shortly the provision which it will be possible to make for the importation of tractors in 1949 and here again special attention will be paid to the need for crawler types,” Mr Nash said.
