REAFFORESTATION ON WEST COAST
EXPERIMENT WITH EXOTIC TREES SUGGESTED
“That the area of land between Rimu and Ross be used as experimental land for the discovery of an exotic tree that will grow on the West Coast to replace milled native timber This suggestion will be discussed at a future meeting of the Westland County Council. The motion was moved after a long discussion at the last meeting of the council, when reafforestation on the West Coast was considered. Mr Wallace stated that the export of timber from Westland would cease if reafforestation was not brought about very soon. “We must do all we can to establish milling in perpetuity in Westland,” he said. It was stated that 700.000,000.000 feet of timber remained to be milled in Westland. Milling had been carried out in Westland for more than 75 years.
