FLOOD RELIEF IN GISBORNE
DISSATISFACTION WITH STATE AID (P.A.)GISBORNE. July 2.
In Spite of the Prime Minister’s assurance in Gisworne a fortnight ago that the Government wished flood sufferers to be treated generously in State financial aid, members of the Gisborne Flood Relief Committee reported to a meeting that there had been no easing of conditions of relief or indications of more generous treatment of applications.
The committee decided to ask the Prime Minister (Mr P. Fraser) to take prompt action to make a more liberal scale of financial relief for flood sufferers. Cases were quoted in which grants offered by the State Advances Department on behalf of the Treasury had been obviously too small to achieve that degree of rehabilitation specified as desirable by the Prime Minister. Cases previously submitted to the Prime Minister had not been reviewed by the departments in spite of statements by Mr Fraser that the assistance offered was obviously insufficient.
