THE LAMBETH CONFERENCE
INAUGURAL SERVICE AT CANTERBURY
LONDON, July 1. The greatest gathering of bishops in the history of the Anglican communion walked in procession to Canterbury Cathedral for the service inaugurating the Lambeth Conference. Fanfares sounded by trumpeters heralded the arrival of the Archbishop of Canterbury (Dr. Geoffrey Fisher), who walked the length of the cathedral to the St. Augustine’s seat. Nineteen archbishops and 313 bishops came in procession before and after Dr. Fisher. Dr. Fisher, in an address of welcome, said: “As never before in human history, false beliefs can, in these days, imposed upon men, shaping the very texture of their inner life and thought. This conference’s chief de?!re is to show again that the Christian gospel is, in its liberating power . truth, the formative belief which | mis age needs, since without it man 5. a ? n . ot find himself nor societies And wholesome order, nor nations their Peace.”
