MAYOR AS CHAIRMAN
“SOME VERY CURIOUS EXPERIENCES ” AUCKLAND, July 2. The Mayor of Auckland (Mr J. A. C. Allum) declined to reply directly when asked to-day if 'political pressure was being exerted on him in an effort to persuade him not to take the chair at a meeting convened by the Auckland branch of the Waterside Workers’ Union for Sunday night. Mr Allum admitted that he had had “some very curious experiences” during the last day or so, but added that they would in no way influence his decision to take the* chair.
“If some people think they can intimidate me, or in any way influence my actions in an important matter such, as this, they have another think coming, ’ he said. “I am doing what I think to be right, and I shall see that the meeting is conducted properly. There will be free speech and no double crossing.”
