VICE-REGAL After a three-day visit to Suva as the guest of the Governor of Fiji (Sir Brian Freeston) and Lady Freeston, the Governor-General (Sir Bernard Freyberg) and Lady Freyberg embarked on the cruiser Bellona this morning. They were received by the commander (Captain D. Hammersley Johnston). The Bellona sailed immediately for Tonga to begin an extensive Pacific cruise. She is expected to reach Nukualofa to-morrow morning, and will go early on the following day to Rarotonga.—Suva, July 2. Mr M. E. Lyons, who represented the Municipal Association of New Zealand on the Central Milk Council during the last term of three years, has been replaced by Mr W. J. Rogers, M.L.C. of Wanganui, on the council, members of which were appointed this week. The other members are Messrs J. J. Maher, M.P.. representing North Island town milk producers, C. JMcFadden, representing South Island town milk producers. Dr. Muriel Bell, and Mr H. E. Combs, M.P.
The Baptist Union of New Zealand is arranging to send its secretary, the Rev. P. F. Lanyon. a former president. Mr E. Nees, of Wellington, and Mrs Nees, to tour the union’s mission field in India. It will be the first visit of this kind since 1921. The party will leave in November and will spend about three months in India conferring with the field. committee on policy matters. They expect to make the return trip by air. Mr G. A. Lye, who has been manager of the General Accident, Fire and Life Assurance Corporation in Christchurch for some 12 years, has been transferred to the Wellington office. Mr J. T. Eltoft has been appointed manager of the corporation’s Christchurch branch.
Mr L. H. Frude, who has been associated with advertising in Dunedin for the last 25 years, the last 14 as district manager at J. Inglis Wright, Ltd., will leave for Wellington soon to take up the position of advertising manager of the “New Zealand Free Lance.” Mr J. J. Parker has been appointed branch manager for the New Zealand Shipping Company in Timaru, and Mr D. G. L. Sharpe accountant. The former branch of the company in Timaru closed in 1921 with the retirement of the late Mr W. J. Cottefill. Mr J. Binsley, who left Palestine ■two months ago. has decided to settle in Christchurch. Mr Binsley, who was formerly a deputy-superintendent in the Palestine Police Force, went to Palestine from England in 1930. The Rev. W. A. 800 l was instituted on Thursday as vicar of the parochial district of Otaio and Bluecliffs. The service, which was held at St. Andrews, South Canterbury, was conducted by the Very Rev. A. K. Warren. Vicar General of the diocese, assisted by the Ven. W. W. Averill, Archdeacon of Timaru. Mr R. G. Wade, the New Zealand chess champion, is to make a second overseas tour. He will leave by the Wairangi about July 24 to take part in tournaments in England and Holland. He hopes to visit Italy and Switzerland.— (P. A.)
