MONEY FOR J FORCE SOLDIERS
LIMIT OF £4O A YEAR
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 2. The maximum payable amount a person serving with J Force was entitled to receive from friends or relatives in any one year had been set at £4O, in line with the general policy of conserving overseas exchange, said the Minister of Customs (Mr W. Nash) to-day. No departure could be made from that procedure, he said, and it was evident from the large quantity of gift parcel mail arriving regularly from servicemen that they already enjoyed adequate facilities for buying gifts. If a serviceman sent a bona fide gift not exceeding £5 in value no duty was charged, but if the valqe of the’ gift exceeded £5, duty, but not sales tax. was charged, but only on the value above £5. In addition, dutiable goods up to the value of £lO were exempt from duty and sales tax if included in the baggage of returning servicemen, provided the amount of duty and sales tax remitted did not exceed £5. In all other cases the customs regulations must be enforced.
