OBITUARY

MR L. H. WATT

The death occurred recently of Mr Laurence Heseltine Watt. Mr Watt was educated at Christ’s College and for many years was employed by Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd. as buyer in the merchandising department. He was president of the Canterbury Wire and Fencing Materials Importers’ Association and a director of Wire Distributors, Ltd., Wellington. Mr Watt was the only son of Mr and Mrs A. H. Watt, Riccarton. He is survived by his widow and a small son. MR D. MUNDY Mr Dan Mundy, who died in Timaru on Thursday at the age of 96, came to Timaru soon after his arrival at Lyttelton from England on the ship Charlotte Gladstone in 1871. He worked on farms till he took up his own holding at Kingsdown. He was well known in the Hadlow and Gleniti districts, and for 20 years was employed by Mr Melville Jamieson at “Otamarama.” He is survived by two sisters, Mrs J. Hardcastle, of Timaru, with whom he has lately been living, and. Mrs A. Squire, of Timaru. MR M. C. PATERSON Mr Matthew Charteris Paterson whose death occurred suddenly at Rangiora on Tuesday night, was drapery manager of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association. Ltd., for the last eight years. Born in Greenvale. Southland, in 1899, Mr Paterson was educated at Gore, where he entered the service of the drapery firm of McGruer, Taylor and Company, later being employed by Thomas Brown. Ltd. In 1933 he joined the staff of the North Otago Farmers’ Co-operative Association. Ltd., at Oamaru. and in September, 1940. was appointed drapery manager at Rangiora. In Gore Mr Paterson was active m the Boy Scouts and Territorials, and for some years was district secretary of the Mataura Presbyterian Bible Classes. He was also a member of the Oddfellows’ Lodge. While at Oamaru Mr Paterson was a Bible Class leader, and later was ordained as deacon and elder of the Presbyterian Church. He also served on the South Oamaru Schoo] Committee. In Rangiora Mr Paterson was inducted as an elder of John Knox Church, and also served as session clerk. He was installed as Worshipful Master of Ashley Masonic Lodge, No. 28, last March. For some years he was chairman of the Rangiora District School Committee. He is survived by his wife, his daughter. Tsobel and a son, Owen

The funeral, which was well attended. was held in Rangiora on Thursday, The Rev lan Polson conducted memorial services at the house and at Knox Church and officiated at the graveside The Masonic service at the graveside was conducted by the lodge chaplain, the Rev. F. O. B. Lane.
