QUESTION TIME IN HOUSE

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 2. Several issues of national interest were raised by members at question time in the House of Representatives this morning. Mr W. A. Sheat (Opposition, Pateai gave notice to ask the Minister of Education (Mr T. H. McCombs) if preparations were well advanced for sending a greatly-enlaced delegation under the leadership of Dr. Beaglehole to represent New Zealand at this year’s annual conference of UNESCO to be held at Beirut. He asked if it was correct that the cost of the delegation would involve a potential demand on dollar funds, probably in excess of 20,000 dollars Mr Sheat asked on what erounds it was considered necessary to send a further contingent to represent New Zealand this time, as two of last year’s delegation were already employed by the UNESCO secretariat. Mr G. H. O. Wilson (Government, Palmerston North) gave notice of his intention to move for leave to introduce a bill to prevent the erection of hoardings outside urban areas. Mr W. J. Broadfoot (Opposition, Waitomo) gave notice of his intention to ask if the Prime Minister’s attention had been drawn to the fact that during recent months families originating in certain Balkan countries, after residing for years in New Zealand, had returned to their native land behind the “Iron Curtain.” “Will the Prime Minister undertake that members of such families will not be allowed to return to this Dominion and thus become servants of the Soviet Union to spread their ooisonous doctrines?” asked Mr Broadfoot.
