CULTURAL SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING HELD “Although we have no wish to see the society grow to a very great size, I would like the membership to reach 150,” said Dr. G. Jobberns (president) at the annual meeting of the Christchurch Cultural Society, held at Begg’s concert hall on Saturday night. Dr. Jobberns said the membership had increased during the last year, which had been very successful, members were taking a livelier interest in the society, and the financial position had improved. Officers were elected as follows: patron. Madame Gower Burns; president, .Dr. Jobberns; vice-presidents. Mrs James Fitzgerald. Miss E. S. Orchard, Messrs L. C. Trave.rs and W. Hutchens; secretary, Mr D. White; treasurer. Mr G. M. Fawcett; auditor. Miss G. Ellen; council, Mesdames A. Bunz, E. McEachen, M. G. Thomson, Misses M. Conolly, J. Hay, Ellen, V. Martin, Messrs C. R. Burrows, and D. Whisker.

Appreciation of the valuable work done for the society by Mrs H. A. Young (vice-president). Mrs N. McCrostie (member of council), and Mr H. C. Brent (secretary), none of whom sought re-election, was expressed by the president. After the business meeting, an enjoyable programme was presented by Mesdames Claude Davies, D. A. Lawson and C. L. Crowley (vocal trios). Miss Tui Uru and Mrs Jean Scrimshaw (songs), Mrs Bernard Banks (elocutionary items), and Miss Zena" Johnson (piano solo). Mesdames McEachen. W. E. Olds and S.
