WAIMATE RAM FAIR DISAPPOINTING SALE FOR MEDIUM SORTS Values at the Waimate ram fair yesterday were disappointing. A record number of 674 sheep was penned, an increase of 50 per cent, on the total last year, and the large entry and dry season had a marked effect on the sale. Buyers were not keen, except for outstanding sheep. Passings were not numerous, and under the circumstances a good .clearance was effected at values below those of last year.* The bulk of the entry consisted of oneshear rams and included a good representation from, outside breeders. The demand, however, was purely local. Good quality Romneys sold well, but little interest was displayed in poorer sorts. The top price of 13 guineas was secured by G. S. Giddings (Fairlie). Two sales were •made on behalf of J. Fox and Son (Waimate) at 12}gns. There was some demand for Border Leicesters, in spite of a heavy entry A sale at 12gns was made on behalf of P. J. Callaghan (Palmerston) and two rams were sold on account of A. F. Rudaenklau (Waimate) at ll}gns. Ryelands comprised a comparatively small section of the catalogue. Top, price of lljgns was paid for three sheep from the flock of- J. N. Lobb (Timaru). Although the sale in the Southdown section was described by one auctioneer as sticky, values obtained in a few instances were among the highest at the fair. Sales were made on account of W. L.' Hay (Waimate) at 14gns, 12}gns, and 12gns, and for R. J. Marshall (Morven) at 13}gns, 12 and UJgns. The average values, however, ranged around 6gns. The bulk of the unregistered sheep entered consisted of the Southdown-Border Leicester cross, and best values ranged from 6 to Bgns, with sales on account of D. D. Stewart (Ashburton) at lOgns, lOJgns, and llgns. The range of values was as follows: Romneys.—Best, 10 to 12Jgns; good, 5 to B}gns. Border Leicester.—Best sorts, 9gns to lljgns; good, 6Jgns to B}gns. Ryeland<—Best, 9gns to llgns; good, sgns to Bgns. Southdown. —Best, lOJgns to 14gns; good, 7gns to 9Jgns.
