SHIELD AND CASKET MATCHES GAMES AGAINST WAIKATO AND HUTT VALLEY (PA..) WELLINGTON, March 19. The Wellington tennis team is leading by four rubbers to two in defence of the Nunneley Casket against Hutt Valley, and leading by eight sets to six in. the Wilding Shield •against Waikato, the rubbers in this match being 3-all. The matches were begun to-day at Mitchell Park, Lower Hutt, and will be completed to-morrow. The day’s play was marked by a marathon doubles between the first Waikato pair, the Roach brothers, and Wellington’s second pair, Angas and Hamilton. Though interest was keen as first one side took a game and then the other, only a handful of shivering spectators remained to see the Waikato pair win.

In the Nunneley Casket match, the 16-year-old Hutt • player, Miss J. Dudding, played steadily against Miss N. Fleming (Wellington). Their first set lasted an hour. Miss Fleming finally winning it 10-8 and then taking the second 6-3. With the 20-year-old Miss P. Macken, Miss Dudding made another brilliant, though unsuccessful, stafid in the doubles against Mesdames McVay and Painter.

Results (Wellington names first): — Nunneley Casket Singles.—Mrs J. McVay beat Mrs J. Graham, 6-3, 9-7; Mrs M. Painter'lost to Mrs R. V. Robb, 3-6, B‘2, 2-6; Miss N. Fleming beat Miss J. Dudding, 10-8, , 6-3; Mrs E. Anderson beat Miss P. Macken, 6-2, 6-2.

Doubles.—Mesdames McVay and Painter beat. Misses Dudding and Macken, 6-2, 8-6; Miss Fleming and Mrs Andersbn lost to Mesdames Robb and Graham, 0-6, 2-6. Wellington four rubbers, nine sets, 70 games; Hutt Valley, two rubbers, four sets, 59 games.

Wilding Shield Singles.—R, S. McKenzie beat Leo Roach, 6-2, 6-4; S. Painter lost to J. Roach, 7-5, 3-6, 3-6; C. Angss beat I. Easton, 6-1, 6-3; J. Hamilton lost to Lon Roach, 1-6, 7-9.

Doubles.—Painter and McKenzie beat Leo Roach and Easton, 6-2, 6-1; Angas and Hamilton lost to J. Roach and Lon Roach, 3-6, 9-7, 9-11. Wellington three rubbers, eight*sets, 76 games; Waikato, three rubbers, six sets, *69 games.
