Walmaln Building Pennits,—Building permits issued last month by the Waimairi County Council totalled 67, valued at £56.270, compared with 61 valued at £45,026 in the corresponding month last year. Newman Society Meeting.—The annual meeting of the Newman Society was held at Canterbury University College recently. His Lordship Bishop Lyons was present, and addressed members. The Bishop was accompanied by the Rector of Holy Name Seminary, the Very Rev. T. Johnston. S.J., M.A., who has been appointed spiritual director of the society. Australian Navy’s Thanks.—Tha Mayor (Mr B. H. Andrews) has received a letter oi thanks from the officers and men of the ships Australia and Bataan for the hospitality and facilities extended by the city during "a moat enjoyable visit.''
