* ELLERMAN AND BUCKNALL (P.A.i WELLINGTON, March 15. Mr L. C. Harris, a director of the Ellerman and Bucknall Steamship Company, Ltd., left Wellington in the Arawa after a visit to the islands. The Ellerman and Bucknail Company took part in founding the American and Australian Steamship Line in the middle nineties of last century, and in 1936, with the New Zealand Shipping Company and the Port Line, participated in establishing the M.A.N.Z. Line of Canada. . .. ~ The Ellerman and Bucknall Company, the City Line, and the Hall Line all belong to the group owned by Ellerman Lines, Ltd., which at the outbreak of war owned 106 ships with a carrying capacity of almost. 1,000,000 tons. During the war 62 of its ships were destroyed, representing a carrying capacity of almost. 500,000 tons. It embarked on an extensive re-, placent programme, and 19 vessels were put into the company’s service during 1947. In December another 22 vessels had been contracted for or wer.e under construction. The company’s New Zealand agencies are in the hands of the Federal Steam Navigation Company.
