FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO PRIVATE SCHOOLS
Sir, —The New Zealand Federation of School Committees has seen fit to discuss the extension of financial assistance to private schools. In the light, of this discussion one wonders if the object of the federation is the promotion of its own schools or the detriment of others. If the former is its object, I would suggest that the subject is completely outside the domain of such a body. The president of the federation, in his opening address, gave a very good summary of the reasons why private schools exist; and the question is not so much one of whether private schools should be assisted as whether this -means should be employed of making some return to those people who are taxed to maintain a system of education to which, in conscience, they cannot subscribe, and from which they receive no benefit.—Yours, etc., ' JUSTICE. March 10, 1948.
