TRACK WORK AT NEW BRIGHTON

TROTTING

EMILY VOLO IN FORM Although no fast times were recorded, the track work was full of interest at New Brighton yesterday morning, when several trainers took the opportunity of giving their horses barrier education under the guidance of the starter, Mr A. Hastings. The trestles were out and all work was done on the outside of the course proper, the splendid condition of which caused much favourable comment. The track was regraded some months ago and under the care of the course superintendent (Mr T. Stevenson), it has been developed into one of the best grass tracks in New Zealand.

Emily Volo, the winner of the Picton Handicap at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting on January 24, attracted attention to her prospects at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday by the bold manner in which she paced when working with Steamboat, Sir Walter. Dauntless, Logan Rey, and Tudor Minstrel. A five-year-old daughter of Lusty Volo and Emily de Oro, Emily Volo, which has finished in the money in five of her last six races, should prove hard to beat from the scratch mark in the Stewards’ Handicap at Hutt Park this week. Now in L. Frost’s Team

Looking well after a spell, Logan Rey, which is a recent addition to L. Frost’s team, indicated that he should soon be back to his best form by finishing practically level with Emily Volo after giving her about 24 yards starts over the last mile. A consistent son of Grattan Loyal and Rey Direct. Logan Rey showed good form when trained by G. S. Smith at Addington to gain four minor placings in his first six starts for the season.

Dauntless, which is trained at Addington bj’ F. G. Holmes, is a promising two-year-old gelding by Light Brigade from a good winner in Coquette. Dauntless has a smooth action, and he should race well in the Timaru Nursery Stakes at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting next month. Castigate, which is now trained by L. Frost, gave a solid display when working alone. If he would race as well as he works. Castigate would be a possibility in the Champion Trotters’ Handicap at Hutt Park on Saturday. Promising Two-year-olds The Halswell trainer, H. J. Smith, Was present with three promising two-year-olds in Perpetua, Willaway, and a filly by Grattan Loyal from a winner in Lady Milne. A nicely-moulded colt, Willaway is by Grattan Loyal from Moneybags. An attractive mover, Willaway should be seen to advantage in the classics later in the season. A filly, Perpetua is by Springfield Globe from Wrack’s Advice, by Wrack from a winner in Free Advice, which left a family of winners including Horse Power. My Lady Luck, Pacing Power, and Free Again. Smith also worked a newcomer to his team in the trotter, Black Sand, which was trained for his races last season by A. W. Johnston at Addington. A four-year-old gelding. Black Sand is by Sandydale from Shadow Queen, which is by Rey de Oro from Placid. On looks, the attractive two-year-old gelding, Nelson’s Son, which is being trained at New Brighton by N. C. Price for Mr P. Evans, should prove capable of holding his own against the best of his age. A racy type. Nelson’s Son is by Gamble from Krina, which left winners in Sprayman, Lady Spray, and Air Spray to the same sire. F. R. May is educating a two-year-old Springfield Globe youngster for Mr H. R. Brien. A big gelding, he stands 16.3 hands. From Belfast Substitute, Play Boy, Double Scotch, and a Jack Potts pacer were all given strong work by C. S. Donald, who trains them at Belfast. Play Boy is an acceptor at both the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s meeting and at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeving. A likely improver, he should be prominent wherever he races. Double Scotch, which was recently bought by Mr Parkinson, showed good form at his last start to finish second to Hall Ace in the first division of the Kiwi Trot Handicap at the Wyndham Racing Club’s meeting on January 1. Substitute, a five-year-old Lusty Volo gelding, has a win and three minor placings to his credit this season. He may add to his record at Rangiora on Saturday. Blue Banner, which was trained for her races last season by G. Cameron, pleased by the manner in which she paced when worked by L. Davidson, who is now training her at New Brighton. Silver Volo and Melruse, which are both carrying a lot of surplus condition, were given light tasks by J. W. Fraser, who has made a good recovery from the serious injuries he suffered when he was thrown when attempting to ride the pacer Matavani some months ago. Finished On Well

Double Deck, which is trained at Papanui by T Gleeson, finished on well to beat Quite Game, Ann Volo, and Calumet Queen over a mile and a half. A five-year-old gelding by Jack Potts from Rose de Oro, Double Deck should race well from the scratch mark in the Peninsula Handicap at the ■ Kaikoura Trotting Club’s meeting this week. Calumet Queen appeared to be lame when she pulled up. Canny Scott was too good for Arborfield over a mile and a half. Canny Scott, which is now being trained by his owner (Mr H. Hunter), will race at Rangiora this week.

Cultivator, the winner of three races earlier in the season, paced freely in his trial. A four-year-old son of Jack Potts and Biddy Harvester, Cultivator may show up from the 48 yards mark in the Kaikoura Handicap at Rangiora on Saturday. • Red Herring, which appeared unlucky during the running of the Trial Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, looked well when he was given light work. Red Herring, which has gained four wins and four minor placings for Mr E. O’Fee this season. must be conceded a good chance from the 12 yards mark in the President’s Handicap at the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s meeting this week. Jottings

Navy Queen, which gained a win and five minor placings in her. 11 races this season, is believed to be safely in foal to Pacing Power. By Grattan Loyal. Navy Queen is out of a winner in Oxford Queen, the dam of a family of winners, including Purina, Oxford Scholar, Leamington. and Scholarship. Laureate will probably be sent out one of the favourites for the Kaitoke Handicap at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday A useful trottei by Lusty Volo from an El Carbine mare, Laureate started the season with two wins and five minor placings. Star Artist is now being trained at Addington by J. Magee. A six-year-old gelding, Star Artist is by Lucky Jack from Cora Derby, which is by Nelson Derby from Cora. Peggy’s Star, the winner of the Great Northern Trotting Stakes at Epsom on Saturday, is a gelding by Master Lawn from a smart performer in Our Peggy. Starting Times Altered
