NAVAL EXERCISES PROCEEDING

GIFT OF SUBMARINES TO TURKEY

( Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, January 9. . -?■. United States naval squadron consisting of the aircraft-carrier Midway, three cruisers, and several destroyers is exercising in the lonian Sea. An official announcement to this e J® ct was made in Athens to-day. It added that the manoeuvres would continue until January 16. In Washington the United States announced that four of its powerful fleet type submarines would be supplied to Turkey as part of the United States programme to strengthen Turkey against the Soviet. The United States has about 180 submarines in its operating and reserve fleets. Officers at the submarine base at Connecticut disclosed that the > four submarines which were being given to Turkey were now in the Pacific and would return to the United States during the next two months. Turkish naval officers are now being trained at Connecticut and Turkish crews are arriving this month for six months’ instruction.

® lso announced that the united States had transferred six gunboats to Greece and that these had already been taken over.
