CAR AND TRAILER DESTROYED
CAUGHT IN FIRE NEAR CLARENCE RIVER While he was driving his car along the Christchurch-Blenheim highway about eight .miles north of the Clarence river on Thursday morning. Mr W. E. Still. 7- Hargood stree* Woolston, became blinded by smoke from a nearby grass fire and drove into a dry ditch on the side of the road. There was a heavy trailer on the back of the car and he was unable to get the vehicles out before the flames spread to them and destroyed them. Mr Still, who was returninc from a camping holiday at Picton, was accompanied by nis wife, his mother (Mrs C. Still), and three children, aged seven and a half years, four years, and three months. When the car became stuck he decided to remove the other occupants to safety and made three trips with them, being almost overcome by the smoke on the third occasion. Few of the contents of the car or trailer, which included a large quantity of household goods, the baby's cot and clothes, and the children’s clothes, were recovered.
