LYTTELTON NEWS

MAGISTRATE’S COURT John Anthony Furber, a ship’s steward, aged 22 years, pleaded guilty in the Lyt telton Magistrate’s Court on Saturday before Messrs W. T. Lester and W. D. Gower, Justices of the Peace, to unlawfully converting to his own use a bicycle, valued at £8 10s, the property of some person unknown. Sergeant L. P. Ricketts said that the accused had been arrested at 2.45 a.m. on Saturday morning after he had taken the bicycle aboard his ship, the Ashburton. Furber told the Court that he had missed the last train from Christchurch and had taken the bicycle from the rear of a hotel. He took it aboard the ship for safetv. intending to return it. A fine of £lO was imposed. New Fire-Hose A type of fire-hose known as 31 inch overland hose has recently been supplied to the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade by the Government. It is for heavy pressure pumping, and it was given a trial last week. A trailer pump was used to pump sea water from the vicinity of No. 2 wharf into a 6in steel main running under the railway crossing to tha rear of the Post Office. The Dennis engine then pumped the water through the overland hose to the Council Chamber corner. By using another pump the water could have been relayed still further up the town. The trial showed that should the highpressure water supply fail during a fire in the main business area, an ample supply of sea water would be available for fire-fighting.
