CALIFORNIAN THISTLE
Sir,—The Railway Department ought to be thoroughly ashamed of itself for the condition of its property along the line from Riccarton railway station to Fendalton road. There is a large patch of Californian thistle, five feet high, all in full flower, by the first bridge on the pedestrian track, ready soon to scatter its noxious seeds far a nd-wide; and from there on there is a tremendous growth of tall grass, etc., overhanging the pathway right up to the iron fence, inviting a good scale fire, if not soon put down and burnt. People are fined for the noxious weeds the Government so carelessly spreads through neglect of plain duty.—Yours, etc-., PEDESTRIAN. December 29, 1947* [An officer of the Railway Department to whom this letter was referred said that the matter had been attended to.]
