THANKS FOR FOOD PARCELS

RECIPIENT SENDS RHYME TO MAYOR

Food parcels sent to England and Scotland by the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews), both personally and from the Mayor’s Relief Fund, have brought him not only letters of thanks—one partly in rhyme—but also copies of English newspapers. The newspapers are sent regularly by the recipient of a food parcel in the Lancashire town of Warrington, and Mr Andrews passes them on to people who have recently arrived in Christchurch from England. Some of the food parcels, which included tins of suet, were sent to a home for elderly women in Edinburgh, and from one of the inmates Mr Andrews received the following rhyme:

Another parcel came to me, From Christchurch far across the sea: A dear old lady eighty-three Had apple dumpling for her tea.

• tA OI6 gift of suet made this possible, and all the other contents are most acceptable,’’ added the writer. Mr Andrews has also received recently requests for food parcels from residents in the Russian zone of Germany. and other parts of the country, and people in other European countries.. Most of the writers are married men and some are elderly men with' no families. The letters are being passed on to the North Canterbury centre of the Red Cross Society.
