CONTROL OF TRAFFIC

APPEAL NOT TO MAKE RIGHT-HAND TURNS An appeal to all road users to avoid making right-hand turns in the city was made yesterday by the Christchurch City Council’s chief traffic inspector (Mr C. S. Nicholson). The department was trying to keep all traffic moving, and motorists who made right-hand turns blocked streams of traffic in three directions, he said. Strict control of traffic in the area affected by the fire would be maintained until the restoration of the traffic lights at the corner of Colombo and Cashel streets, said Mr Nicholson. The area had been blocked off to traffic in Cashel street between Oxford terrace and High street, and in Colombo street from Hereford street to Lichfield streets, and this had put traffic congestion on to Hereford, Tuam. and Manchester streets and Oxfonl terrace. Inspectors would be stationed at all corners to direct traffic, he said.
