RELIEF FUND GIFTS

An offer of £250 if a relief fund for relatives and dependants of victims of the fire was opened was received yesterday by the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) from Mr B. Sutherland (Wellington). A Greytown resident, who was anonymous, offered £lOO. The complement of H.M.N.Z.S. Bellona, which is visiting Lyttelton, subscribed £5O to the fund, and Captain M. B. Laing. R.N., supplemented the ship’s gift with a personal contribution of £lO. Wages amounting to about £2OOO were destroyed in the fire. The wages were already in envelopesand were to be distributed a quarter of an hour after the fire broke out.
