BYELECTION IN WESTLAND
ADDRESSES BY CANDIDATES There were more than 300 electors at Blackball to hear the National candidate in the Westland by-election campaign (Mr J. F. Lockington) state his policy. The candidate was given an attentive hearing and answered several questions. He was accorded a vote of thanks. The Labour candidate, Mr J. B. Kent, spoke at Ngahere, where he was accorded a vote of thanks. DRY WEATHER ON WEST COAST So far November has been a dry month on the West Coast, and in some country districts not served by a water supply householders have had to be economical with the use of water. A little more than two inches •of rain has fallen in the coastal areas, but with a number of sunny days evaporation has been heavy. In the last nine days only 18 points of rain have been recorded at Greymouth, four points on Sunday breaking a succession of rainless days. STOLEN CAR FOUND AT FOOT OF CLIFF A sedan motor-car, which was removed from the garage at the home of the owner, Mr S. Perrin (Paparoa) on Friday evening, was found on Monday evening badly damaged at the foot of a 60ft cliff of the terrace fringing the Blackball sports ground. EXTENSION TO ROAD TO COOK’S LEASE AREA The clearing of the bush for the extension of the road to the Cook’s lease area, which is being opened up in the Westport Coal Company’s Denniston mining area, is almost completed, and the road foundation is being put down by the Buller County Council. The miners’ bus is now running as far as the -Cedar creek bridge, which is two and a half miles beyond Burnett’s Face.
Through the generosity of Mr James Truman (Greymouth), a billiard table has been made available to the West Coast Old Boys’ Association, which lost both its billiard tables in the recent Greymouth Town Hall fire. Women’s Marching.— Advice from the Westport association that the challenge which had been arranged for December 6 between West Coast and Buller teams for the L.V.A. Cup and other trophies had to be postponed, because the Technical School at Westport is holding its jubilee on that date, was received at a meeting of the Greymouth Women’s Marching Association this week. The Westport association said that it would give consideration to any other date which was suggested, and December 13 was decided on as a tentative date.
Fog Indicators on Road.— Fog indicators are to be erected on the Granity-Millerton road by the Buller County Council. The need for this precaution was reported by the Traffic Inspector (Mr M. W, Allerby) at a recent meeting of the county council
