COMMANDANT OF W.A.A.C.
FAREWELL BY DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS
Senior Commander E. Gray, commandant of the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps in the Southern Military district, who has retired from her position, and has been posted to the active list of the territorial force, was yesterday bidden farewell by the staff of District Headquarters. Brigadier E. T. Rowllings, officer commanding the Southern Military District, spoke appreciatively of Senior Commander Gray s record of service.
Senior Commander Gray has seen service in two wars. In the war of 1914-18 she served overseas as an ambulance driver and voluntary aidIn the years between the two wars she was provincial commissioner of Girl Guides in Nelson. When the recent war broke out she formed the Red Cross Transport Service in Nelson, and was its first commandant. Senior Commander Gray was with the 36th Composite A.A. Regiment, and went to Burnham with the first members of the W.A.A.C. in October, 1943. She remained there until March, 1945, when she succeeded Senior Commander J. N. Irwin as district commandant, W.A.A.C., Southern Military District.
On Monday evening Seni6r Commander Gray was the guest of honour at a dinner given by the members of the Southern Military District W.A.A.C. in their quarters at Burnham.
