PRICES FOR TOWN MILK
SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE TO PRODUCERS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 8. A substantial increase in the price paid to producers of town milk, some of it retrospective to November 1, 1946. will be announced before the end of next week. This information was given by the Minister of Marketing (Mr E. L. Cullen) in reply to Mr J. J. Maher (Opposition, Otaki) in the House of Representatives to-day. Mr Maher asked if the Government was prepared to give town milk producers tne additional Ud a gallon for which they asked to cover anomalies between town milk and cheese prices. Mr Maher said the executive of the Town Milk Federation, now assembled in Wellington, awaited an official pronouncement.
Mr Cullen said that the Government preferred to await the result of a cost survey before a final determination of the permanent price to be paid for town milk. In the meantime in conformity with arrangements already made with town milk producers the Government had referred to the Stabilisation Commission the price to be paid for town milk in consideration of increased prices paid in respect of butter-fat as recently announced.
