N.Z. WOMEN’S TITLE EVENT

MISS HUDSON’S NARROW WIN

** The Press '* Special Service AUCKLAND, Oct. 17. Miss Jean Horwell to-day won the Mellsop Cup for medal play at the New Zealand women’s championship golf tournament. Her 76 in the third : and final .rougd, tfedgy gave, her an aggregate of 236, six strokes _ bettet’ -than that of Miss E. Wilkinson, of Grange. Miss Horwell also won the Jessie Reid rose bowl for the best net score over three rounds. In the quarter-finals of match play in the championship, two Aucklanders, Miss Wilkinson and Miss R. Hodges, both of the Auckland Club, Miss Horwell, temporarily of Palmerston North but normally of Timaru, and Miss Z. Hudson, of Christchurch, had Wins to enter the semi-finals to-morrow. Miss Wilkinson, Miss Hodges, and Miss Horwell each had a comfortable enough win, but Miss Hudson was lucky to win from Mrs P. R. Glanville, of Te Awamutu. Mrs Glanviile’s failure to put her approach shot on the sixteenth green cost her the match, for Miss Hudson had already failed with hers, and Mrs Glanville could easily have won with a five instead of halving a“six. It would have put her 1 up and compensated her for Miss Hudson’s luck in sinking a chip from off the green at the fifteenth. Mrs Glanville won the seventeenth with a birdie four after a good long putt. Her accurate second on the eighteenth stopped about 30 feet beyond the pin. Miss Hudson’s second was half topped, ball rolled until it lay about four ’Feet beyond the hole. Mrs Glanviile’s putt was a little too strong. Miss Hudson missed hers, but laid Mrs Glanville a dead stymie. Mrs Glanville played a niblick but a beautifully judged shot just failed to go down. . Miss Hudson put her tee shot at'the short nineteenth into a bunker, but Mrs Glanville did the same. Mrs Glanville gut her second about 20 feet beyond the ole. Miss Hudson played to within four feet. Mrs Glanviile’s putt was short and Miss Hudson sank hers.
