FREE KINDERGARTENS

DISPLAY OF STUDENTS’ WORK

Work done by kindergarten students during the year in art handwork, and kindred subjects was displayed yesterday in the St. Andrew’s churcn hall. The walls were covered with wellexecuted posters suitable for the teaching of nature study and elementary hygiene and for illustrating stories. An idea of the work being undertaken in the kindergartens was gained from the type of equipment which had been made by the students, peg boards for colour matching, jig-saw puzzles, boats and railway carriages with interlocking connexions which had been turned out by the girls during their woodwork classes would have done credit to much more experienced craftsmen. A great deal of imagination and patience had evidently been expended on the making of an outstanding collection of dolls. One doll, a footballer complete with boots, attracted particular attention. Other well-made articles included percussion band instruments, wooden book ends, flower troughs, and clay modelled figures. The work of 27 students in their first and second years of training by the Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association was represented. Th a exhibition will be open again this afternoon.
