LAWYERS’ GOLF

W. J. HUNTER CUP

About 50 members of. th 6 Canterbury District Law Society played in the annual golf match at Shirley links yesterday for the W.. J. Hunter Cup. The winner was Mr C. G. Pen-* lington, with a score of 1 down. The competition was inaugurated in 1925, when Mr (now Mr Justice) Hunter gave a cup to the Canterbury District Law Society for annual competition. Since that date, with the exception of the years of war. when the competition lapsed, members of the profession and their wives look forward each year to this fixture at which the players, their wives and friends, are entertained by the president of the society and his wife.

For the last few years the weather has been unpleasant on the day appointed for the match, and yesterday heavy showers fell in the early afternoon, probably deterring many players from setting out. But conditions improved and a very large number of guests assembled at the club house and were welcomed by Mr W. R. Lascelles (president of the society) and Mrs Lascelles, who entertained them at tea. Later Mr Lascelles thanked the Christchurch Golf Club for the use of the course and expressed pleasure that Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., and Mrs Lawry and Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., were able to be present. Mrs Lascelles presented the cup to Mr Penlington and a prize for to Mrs Lawry. ' The best scores were: C. G. Penlington. 1 down; E. J. Corcoran. A. T. Bell. M. W. Simes, and G. S. Branthwaite, all 2 down.
