PROPOSAL TO INCREASE STIPENDS
A private bill suggesting the postponement of the Canterbury Centennial Exhibition for five years, because of housing, labour and power difficulties, will be introduced at the annual synod of the Diocese of Christchurch, which will open next Monday. Archbishop West-Watson will deliver his address to the synod on Monday afternoon.
The purpose of another bill to be introduced- will be to raise the stipends of vicars and assistant curates. It is proposed to increase the minimum stipend in parochial districts from £3OO to £325. and in parishes from £335 to £375. The present minimum stipend for assistant curates is £2OO. and the bill proposes that they should receive £225 in their first year. £250 in their second year, and £275 in third or subsequent years as assistant curates. Provision for the consolidation of past loans to Craighead Diocesan School. Timaru. is made in another bill, which proposes to give approval to the decision of the standing committee to make a further loan of up to £3OOO to provide additional accommodation at the school.
