MAILS
Sir, —In 1939 New Zealand boasted of penny postage, and on a Saturday afternoon it was possible to post a letter in the suburbs up to 4.30 p.m. and have it delivered in Wellington and Hutt Valley early on the following Monday morning. Now such a letter must be posted in suburbs before 9 a.m. on Saturday morning. Deliveries reach the suburbs long after 9 a.m., and if one desires to reply expeditiously to a letter from Wellington received on Saturday morning it is necessary to pay late fee and tram it to the Square. This makes the tost up to 12 times or more what it was .n 1939. Of course, one can save tram fares by wearing out what is called shoe leather or bicycle tyres. That alternative is not convenient in wet weather; and it is. impossible for the physically disabled. There should be a Saturday afternoon clearance.— Yours, etc., BETTER SERVICE WANTED. October 5, 1947.
