“ILL-GOTTEN GRAIN”
Sir, —I note your leading article of last Saturday pointing out that the New Zealand farmer did not last year produce sufficient wheat for our own requirements. I would like to point out that New Zealand farmers fell down not only on wheat, but on oats, barley, meat, potatoes, and linseed. I do not know about butter-fat. as I have not got the details. I read recently in a cabled message that in France, a tax of £8 an acre is being imposed op arable land which is not efficiently used for production. Does this suggest a method of dealing with those large areas of arable land in Canterbury which are owned by farmers who allow them to grow “broom and gorse and low type pastures such as brown top”?—Yours, etc., MORE PRODUCTION.
