AUSTRALIAN RACING

RANK OUTSIDER WINS EPSOM

VALIANT CROWN’S DERBY (Rec. 5.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Oct? 5. When the outsider, Titanic, came from last in the field to win the Epsom Handicap at Randwick, he caused what according to racegoers was "the skinner of the century.” With a brilliant burst of speed he came from the tail of. the field in an uninterrupted run along the rails to become the longest-priced Epsom winner in 50 years. The horses were closely bunched, But the favourite, Columnist, appeared to have the race won when he forged ahead at the Leger. Titanic’s finish overwhelmed the opposition, and he was going away at the post. Monogram came through in the centre to challenge and just managed to shade Columnist.

The Derby in comparison with the Epsom was a procession, with Valiant Crown leading practically all the way to win easing up by two and a half lengths. At one stage Valiant Crown was at least 12 lengths ahead, and at the home turn he had a lead of a good four lengths. Conductor and Sovereign, who filled the minor placings. did not distinguish themselves, and critics say that the race merely proved Valiant Crown to be the best of a poor lot of three-year-olds. At his last start, in the Rosehill Guineas, Valiant Crown finished third, two lengths behind Conductor.

The Breeders’ Plate provided a similar victory for the favourite, which won the race from when he jumped clear at the start. Simpkin began slowly, but had tooo much pace for Foxami at the finish. The Colin Stephens Stakes provided some surprises. Before the race Proctor was almost as hot a favourite for the Melbourne Cup as was Phar Lap in .1930. When he could do no better than gain third, place, punters lost heavily and took a pessimistic view of the fate of their investments on the Melbourne Cup. The race was a duel between Russia and Silver Link, which were fourth and fifth at the home turn but came through in a dazzling finish to dead-heat. Results;— KENSINGTON HANDICAP, Of £lOOO.
