AGANEV UNLUCKY

SPLENDID FINISHING RUN Aganev provided the third dead-heat of day at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting at Wingatui on Saturday when she got up th divide the honours with Grand Pal in the Salisbury Hack Handicap, after putting in a splendid sustained finishing run from well back and having to change her course in the straight. In another stride she would have won outright. Grand Pal was also well back in the early running, but was handy at the home turn and covered less ground than Aganev. Fine Night had the run of the race, and after being in front at the furlong was run down by the dead-heaters; Great Chum and Lorenzo were the early leaders from Dowlair, Sir Raimond, and Fine Night in line, with Sedgemere, Bobby Dazzler, and Gallimaufry in line behind them, followed by Stand To and Grand Pal. The latter started to improve his position from the five furlongs; and turning for home Lorenzo still had charge from Fine Night, Gallimaufry, Grand Pal, Dowlair, Sir Raimond, badly placed, Stand To, and Aganev. Lorenzo weakened as soon as the straight was reached,. and at the distance Fine Night took charge, but Grand Pal, finishing •strongly wide out, soon headed him. Just as Grand Pal looked to have the race in hand, Aganev finished; very fast in the middle of the track, and the judge was unable to separate them. Fine Night held on for third, two lengths back, with three lengths to Gallimaufry, which was followed by Sir Raimond and Dowlair. First Win Over Hurdles

Showing further improvement, Foreign Ways scored his .first win as a hurdler when he won the Wakari Hurdles very comfortably from Sir Saladin and First Out, which had a hard fight for second money. Money Bird was eight lengths clear of First Out, Powys, San Quentin, Sir Saladin, and Foreign Ways' with a mile to run. Court Dress, which was slow away, was about 15 lengths from the leader. Money Bird pulled right up at the hurdle near the mile, leaving First Out and San Quentin in front. Along the back Foreign Ways improved his position, and at the three furlongs San Quentin and First Out led from Foreign Ways, Money Bird, and Sir Saladin. First Out led into the straight, but Foreign Ways took charge going into the last hurdle, and carried on to win easily from Sir Saladin, which got up to beat First Ojrt by half a head. San Quentin, which dipped badly at the last hurdle, was fourth, followed by Court Dress and Money Bird. Had Best of the Start

Royal Anne got the best of the. start in the Trial Handicap from Glen Cona, which began best of the others, and this pair fought out the finish, with Glen Cona just getting up in the, last stride to deadheat with Royal Anne. The favourite, Some Sal, just beat Duncaigan for third after being not too well placed on the home turn. Royal Anne streaked away from the barrier at the end of two furlongs, and was three lengths clear of Glen Cona, Flibbertigibbet, and Arctotis, with Royal Lark, Duncaigan, Paprika, and Some Sal at the head of the others. There was no change in the leading division to the straight, Royal Anne still being clear, of Glen pona, Arctotis, and Flibbertigibbet, with Buncaigan, Some Sal, ahd ’Royal Lark next. Royal Anne was still in front at the furlong, with Glen Cona working hard to catch her. Royal Anne looked like holding on, but Glten Cona closed on her nearing the post and just got up to her on the line. Three lengths back Some Sal held off a late' challenge by Duncraigan by a head. There were gaps to Detract and Royal Lark, which were followed by Carry On, Flibbertigibbet, and Pestee. .

First Win for 12 Months Revelling in the conditions, Triumphal came from a long way back to win the Apprentices’ Handicap easily - from Duvaals, which was never further back than second in the running. It was Triumphal’s first success since he won the same race 12 months ago, an 4 he has now qualified for open company. Slick made the early running from Duvaals and Punjab, with Incitatus, Hart Royal, and Make Good next, clear of Triumphal. Duvaals took over the lead turning for home, and was followed by Funjahand Slick, two lengths Clear of Incitatus, Hart Royal, and Make Good, with Triumphal making ground on the outer. Once the straight was reached Punjab and Slick started to weaken, and at the furlong Duvaals just had charge from Incitatus, Hart Royal, and Triumphal, finishing fast wide out. Triumphal carried on to win by two lengths, with Duvaals holding on for second, half a length in front of Incitatus, which beat Hart Royal tor third place by half a head. Slick was next, followed by Vanity King and Robot. Shadamai Just Holds On

Although he showed improvement on his McLean Stakes running, Shadamai appeared just a shade lucky to win the Juvenile Handicap, just lasting long enough to hold off a strong challenge by Trident by a head. Trident had a, rough passage over the, first furlong, and this cost her the race. St. Bruno, the pacemaker to the distance, held on tor third. St. Bruno, Village - Beauty, and Shadamai jumped out best, and at the end of a furlong St. Bruno was the pacemaker from Village Beauty, and Shadamai, with Tirdent, Robin Redbreast, Card Money, Finigin, and Bay Gundi in close order behind them. The 'order was the same to the straight, and at the distance Shadamai challenged St. Bruno and soon had his measure. Trident finished strongly over the last furlong and gradually closed on Shadamai, but just failed to head him off, Robin Redbreast was finishing on in fourth place, with' Finigin right in line with him. Then came King of Erin, Village Beauty, Balkis, Sir Abbott, and Zarcon. When the field had travelled about a furlong and a half, Card Money and Bay Gundi fell, and A. P. Powell, the rider of Card Money, was sent to hospital, suffering from a broken collarbone and

Inquiry Into Accident Arising from the accident in the Juvenile Handicap, in which Card Money and Bay Guncji fell, the Dunedin Jockey Club’s judicial committee held an inquiry ■into alleged crossing by W.
