METHVEN CLUB

I TROTTING

TODAY’S PROSPECTS With some promising trotters, including Flame, Mont Serrat, Dame Durdin, Con iriri Girl, and Laureate engaged the first division of the Drayton Trot Han dicap the opening event at the Methvei Trotting Club’s meeting to-day, shoulc provide an exciting contest. At her only start for the season, Flarm gave a fine display to finish in second place t° Acclamation in the Addingtor Trotting Stakes at the New Zealanc Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting or August 30. On the strength of that performance, Flame 'will probably be sent oui favourite to-day. Mont Serrat. a five-year-old gelding by Nelson Derby from Queen s Treasure, gained three third plac*hgs in his five races for his owner-trainer B. Grice, last season, and that form entitles him to respect. Dame Durdin. a winner at the matinee meeting at Methven recentlv, is a sister to a fine trotter in Jason’s Quest. Now a five-year-old. Dame Durdin should not be long in winning a race for Messrs M. S. Turton and J. F. Grant, for whom she lis trained at Temuka by T. H. Gunning. A Lusty Volo mare, Laureate was placed at her last start, and she may take part in the finish with Flame and Mont Serrat. Pat Review, which is trained at Rakaia by R. H. Butterick, who has a successful record with trotters, stands out in the second division, and he should have.little difficulty in beating what appears to be a weak field. Most opposition fo Pai Review may come from Rising Monarch, which showed good form at his first start since being trained by C; M. Laing to win the Allenton Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on May 4k Steel Sword, which finished in second place to Rising Monarch in that race, appeals as the best of the remainder. The large field. of" 23 pacers carded in the Methven Cup, the main event for pacers, includes some good performers in Mountain -Hall, Right Royal, Ben Adam, Imperial Grattan, Windermere, Lady Ngaio, Vimy Ridge, and Ingle Belmer. Lady Ngaio has finished in second place at her last two starts. A good stayer, Lady Ngaio looks well, and she should extend Mountain Hall, Ben Adam, and Right Royal over the last two furlongs. Excellent fields are carded throughout the programme and, with the prospects of fine weather and a good tracjc. the meeting should prove one of the most success-
