BRITISH MOTOR INDUSTRY

REDUCED NUMBER OF NEW MODELS (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, October 3. The president of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (Sir Miles Thomas) said to-day: “It is ‘export or exit’ for us. We have got to sell overseas on merit and on price.” Sir Miles Thomas referred to a suggestion by Hie Minister of Supply (Mr John Wilmot) that each firm should produce only one model. He said manufacturers would standardise components as far as possible, and would reduce the number of models to 42 within 18 months, compared with 136 in 1939. but an enforced reduction at a quicker rate would throw the industry into chaos.

The attainment of the target set by the Board of Trade would entail the production of vehicles at the rate of 475.000 a year by December. 1949. compared with the present rate of 300,000 a year.
