ATOMIC ENERGY CONTROL

DR. GARBETT’S VIEWS

INTERNATIONAL AGENCY SUPPORTED

(Rec. 11.40 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 2. An appeal to all Christians to unite in supporting international control of atomic energy was made by the Archbishop of York (Dr. Cyril Garbett) in an address to the diocese. /He said that if Russia would not cooperate, other nations must proceed without her on the understanding that Soviet adherence would be welcome at any time. “If one nation must have a monopoly of the bomb this should for the time being be the United States, but not -every nation is confident that thq United States will not use the bomb for power politics. “I think that even the peace-loving United States might give way under a wave of national danger or panic to the temptation to employ the bomb against some hated enemy.” Dr. Garbett commended the Baruch plan. Russia asked that all existing bombs be destroyed, but it was unreasonable to expect the United States to destroy her most powerful weapon until she had a guarantee that some other nation was not making it.
