Mr Justice Gresson was sworn in by tne Chief Justice (Sir Humphrey O Leary) yesterday morning. It is expected that Mr Justice Gresson’s first appearance on the Bench will be on Monday.—(P.A.)

Messrs E. T. Beaven, A. Henderson, H. C. Hurst, and W. S. Mac Gibbon were appointed last evening to represent the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce at the conference to be called by the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) for the formation of a district Aid to Britain committee. The council of the chamber decided to ask the Mayor to call the conference as soon as possible. Sympathy with the relatives of Mr J. G. L. Vernon was expressed by the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce at its meeting last evening. The president (Mr E. T. Beaven) said that Mr Vernon had been a.member of the Chamber of Commerce for 12 years, a member of the council from 1937 to 1943, and an honorary member from 1943 to 1945, while he was on war service. “I feel that Christchurch has lost a very useful citizen,” said Mr Beaven. Mr D. U. White, engineer-in-charge at Kaikoura of the South Island main trunk railway construction, is under transfer to the Cobb power scheme. The president of the New Zealand Institute of Secretaries (Mr G. M. Boulton, Wanganui), and Mr A. G. Wilson, an Auckland councillor, were welcomed by the president of the Canterbury Chapter of the Institute (Mr H. R. Bennington) at a luncheon held yesterday. Mr D. A. Hudson, plant engineer for the Public Works Department’s central zone, has been appointed plant engineer for the South Island, in succession to Mr C. Edgar Smith who resigned to join a private contracting firm.

Mr F. L. Harrison, of Christchurch, has been appointed general manager of the Gear Meat Company. Ltd.; of Wellington. He will take up nis duties on November 1. Mr J. P. Mackay will retire on December 31, at his own request, after 45 years’ service.—(P.A.)
