AID FOR REWI ALLEY

UNIVERSITY INTEREST IN WORK Representatives of student bodies in the college and members of the Canterbury University College staff gathered last evening at a special meeting convened by Messrs A. T. Campbell, Winston Rhodes, and P. J. Alley to discuss the formation of a group within the college whose function it would be to assist the work of Rewi Alley in China by sending literature, agricultural and industrial tools, and articles required for his co-opera-tive training schools.

CORSO could no longer specialise in sending relief to China and to Rewi Alley’s industrial co-operative activities, said Mr Campbell, so that if his work for the Chinese were to prosper assistance must be sought from the public, which he was sure would readily associate itself with Mr Alley’s scheme. Mr Rhodes said the industrial cooperative movement was not merely a philanthropic affair. It benefited only those people who were willing to help themselves. After discussion about the nature of a possible campaign to assist Mr Alley’s project, it was decided to leave the preliminary administration to the following committee:—Messrs A. T. Campbell (staff), Winston Rhodes (staff). T. H. Scott (Canterbury Agricultural College), P. J. Alley (staff), R. J. Scarlett (students), and W. Rosenberg (staff), and Mrs J. M. Horn (Student Christian Movement).
