PEACE
Sir, —Mr Randolph Churchill’s prophecy that we will enjoy peace for 10 years is comforting. Meanwhile, let us not forget Singapore, where the guns were useless because they pointed bne way only, like Mr Churchill’s remarks. To-day’s friends were enemies yesterday; vesterday’s bombfc are obsolete to-day; to-morrow’s friends are enemies to-day; and today’s bombs will be obsolete tomorrow. We can completely trust people only when they fire dead; and that applies to the U.S.A., the or anywhere alse.—Yours, etc., r, a „ H. J. BUTTLE. Darfield, September 29, 1947
..Sir, —Mr Randolph Churchill says there is certainty of peace for 10 years, and that America has a monopoly of the atomic bomb. Dangerous delusions. Will the military sphere remain static 10 years while Russian expansion goes on relentlessly every 10 days. Loud speakers and printing presses follow the Red Army. The apple of democracy, already grub-infested, will cry to high heaven long before 10 years. Scientific research is not static, and in my view Russia has something more deadly even than the atomic bomb; and probably has the bomb in a workable form. In 10 years, if the infiltration goes on, Mr Randolph Churchill, and the proud democracy to which both he and I belong, will be as a tale that is told. Remember Munich? You will remember Persia!—Yours, etc.. THE SEA OF AZOF. September 30, 1947.
Sir, —It is time a voice was raised in protest against Randolph Churchill’s war-mongering in this country. This descendant of the Duke of Marlborough would be well advised to return to/his erstwhile employment as a columnist for the popular English Sunday newspapers; he will not find New Zealanders to x be political innocents enough to be deceived by this typical Churchillian hymn of hate against our erstwhile allies of the U.S.S.R. Hardly are the dead of the recent war cold in their graves than he is touring the world disseminating his pernicious propaganda. It is not surprising that Russia is suspicious and mistrustful in her dealings with the other United Nations when she is so constantly subjected to these calumnious attacks by Mr Churchill and his counterparts in the land of the almighty dollar.—Yours, etc., PONTIFEX. October 2, 1947.
