FALSE PRETENCES CHARGE
MAN COMMITTTED FOR TRIAL (P_A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Oct. 2. Stewart Edward Coyle, salesman, was charged to-day in the Magistrate's Court at New Plymouth on two counts of obtaining a total of £650 by false pretences. He pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court at New Plymouth for trial. It was alleged in evidence that Coyle, calling himself ”Jim Broughton.” told Robert Ernest Peat, an Opunake tailor, that he had a brother in the Merchant Navy who was being discharged and had ; goods in bond valued at £3OOO. He I wanted £lOO as advance payment for i Customs duties. On February’ 19, Peat paid Coyle £4OO in cash on the under--1 landing that he was to receive the equivalent in value in suiting materials. On February 24, it was alleged, Coyle coli iected a further £250. This had been ■ transmitted to Wellington by Peat in a money-order telegram on the understand- | ing that an additional advance payment | was required and that he would be compensated with suitings.
