SUPPLIES OF EARLY VEGETABLES
CABBAGES SOLD AT LOW PRICES Good supplies of early vegetables are now being received at Christchurch markets, and early spring cabbages are being sold at less than the ceiling price for the first time for several years. Last year the ceiling price for cabbages was 25s per cwt, but, after representations by the growers, it was increased this year to 45s per cwt. Cabbages are being sold in the markets at the present time for 10s per cwt. A plentiful supply of cauliflowers is also reported. Yesterday they were sold for about 11s 6d a dozen, but recent prices have been as low as 4d each. In recent weeks, some members of the public have been attending the markets to buy their vegetable requirements, and have benefited through the low ruling prices. More early lettuces are being marketed from hill land, and also some from market gardens on the plains. A very small supply of asparagus has realised good prices, and the first local strawberries recently brought from 7s to 8s a punnet.
