SURPLUS BREN GUN CARRIERS
525 SOLD BY PUBLIC TENDER All the 525 Bren gun carriers declared surplus by the Army at the end of last year have now been sold by the War Assets Realisation Board. The carriers, which included 119 stored at Burnham, were offered for disposal by public tender, and most were bought by individual tenderers. Some of the carriers were sold to farmers, who have put them to various
uses on their farms. Several have been converted into gorse-cutting machines, and others are being used as stationary power plants. Many have been bought solely for the excellent steel of which they are built, and garage, owners have used the engines to but into truck’s.
Horse trainers with private tracks have also found the carriers useful to tow graders, and the Christchurch City Council is buying three from a firm of motor dealers, and one from the War Assets Realisation Board. Three will be useful for the engines only, and the other may be converted into a tractor crane. More carriers are to be offered for sale in the future, and the Canterbury Gliding Club plans to buy one for towing purposes.
