INDOOR BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

(P A ) WELLINGTON, October 1. Some brilliant displays by Palmerston North, the title-holders, and Wellington, were features of the women’s national indoor basketball championships, which began in Wellington to-day. Eighteen teams are participating. 11 in the A grade and seven in the B grade. Palmerston North ran up some high scores, but was given an unexpectedly hard game by Canterbury in the A grade, the latter rising to the occasion, but over the final stages could not match the clever teamwork of Palmerston North. Results:— A Grade Wellington 44, Nelson 12; Hamilton 2b. Morrinsville 13; Palmerston North 32 Canterbury 20; Gisborne 28, Otago 11. Southland 22, New Plymouth 9; Auckland 37, Morrinsville 12; Palmerston North 42 Otago 9; Wellington 31, Canterbury 9. Southland 21, Gisborne 15; Palmerston North 27, Hamilton 12; New Plymouth 25, Nelson 16; Gisborne 23. Canterbury 17. Auckland 19, Hamilton 11: Wellington 21. Morrinsville 9.

B Grade Wairarapa 27, Canterbury 17. The tournament will be continued tomorrow.
